On November 28, 2018, Hualu Hengsheng held a press conference titled \"Successful Commissioning of China’s Largest High-Efficiency Syngas-to-Ethylene Glycol Plant,\" announcing the official start of operations for this project. In 2013, Zhongke Yuandong successfully developed the key catalyst for producing ethylene glycol from syngas, and completed the expert review of the 200,000-ton ethylene glycol production process package. In March 2014, line testing was conducted at Hualu Hengsheng’s 50,000-ton ethylene glycol production facility. In May 2015, the technical upgrade of Hualu Hengsheng’s 50,000-ton ethylene glycol production facility was completed and the facility came online. It operates stably, with low production costs; the product quality meets polyester standards, with a 100% rate of top-quality products. All of the output is used in the polyester industry. In July 2016, Zhongke Yuandong signed a technical contract with Hualu Hengsheng for the production of 500,000 tons of ethylene glycol, thereby establishing the largest coal-based ethylene glycol production facility in China. Hualu Hengsheng’s 500,000-ton ethylene glycol project is located within the new factory complex of Shandong Hualu Hengsheng Chemical Co., Ltd. in the Canal Economic Development Zone of Dezhou City. The total estimated investment for the feasibility study is 2,674,280,000 yuan, with a construction period of 24 months. The project involves the construction of an ethylene glycol plant with an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons. The production capacity is as follows: 500,000 tons per year of ethylene glycol, 15,000 tons per year of dimethyl carbonate, 33,000 tons per year of mixed monohydric alcohols, 22,000 tons per year of light dihydric alcohols, and 11,000 tons per year of heavy dihydric alcohols. The entire production process for this project was completed in October 2018. On November 13, the plant’s production capacity reached 100%, with a daily output of 1,490 tons – close to the designed target of 1,500 tons per day – and the rate of high-quality products was 100%.
