The 200,000-ton/year methanol production project using coke oven gas at Zhongtai Coal Coking has begun producing methanol. Author/Source: Henan Energy and Chemical Industry Group Xinjiang Company. Date: March 5, 2021. Clicks: 48. At 20:18 on March 3, the project was successfully launched after the initial feeding process, and qualified methanol was produced. The successful commissioning of this project not only marks the establishment of Xinjiang Company’s first chemical enterprise, but also provides Henan Energy with experience in developing the chemical industry in Xinjiang, laying a foundation for the company’s high-quality development. In accordance with the access conditions for the coking industry and relevant environmental protection and energy utilization policies, the 200,000-ton/year methanol production project from coke oven gas is a comprehensive utilization project constructed to complement Zhongtai Coal Coking’s 1.3-million-ton/year and 600,000-ton/year coking projects. It converts surplus coke oven gas into methanol through processes such as refined desulfurization, conversion, syngas compression, and methanol distillation. Once the project is put into operation, it will be able to produce 200,000 tons of methanol per year, consume 432 million cubic meters of excess gas from coke ovens, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 39,500 tons, thereby addressing the environmental pollution caused by the release of coke oven gas. It is understood that this project is a key project under the autonomous region’s 13th Five-Year Plan. It is the only enterprise in southern Xinjiang that produces methanol from coke oven gas, and it houses the group company’s first facility for producing methanol from waste coke oven gas. After resuming work officially in March 2019, the project overcame various challenges, including two outbreaks of the pandemic in Xinjiang, severe delays in the delivery of the air separation unit, unfavorable winter weather conditions for commissioning, difficulties in organizing workers and technical personnel from the manufacturer during the Spring Festival, and a shortage of skilled personnel for starting up the methanol production facility. With the support of Henan Energy, the selfless assistance of the Yima Industrial Park and the coal gasification company, as well as the joint efforts of the Xinjiang-based company and the project contractors, the workers worked day and night, braving extreme heat and cold, and strictly adhered to all safety and environmental protection regulations. By focusing on construction safety and quality, they made every effort to advance the project’s progress. On December 24, 2020, the facility began trial production using gas, and on March 3, 2021, qualified methanol was successfully produced.
