A few days ago, the Key Laboratory for Clean and Efficient Utilization of Coal-based Energy, jointly established by the province and the ministry, was officially inaugurated. Xie Kechang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the lead scientist of the **Key Laboratory for Clean and Efficient Utilization of Coal-based Energy, which is jointly established by provincial and ministerial authorities, Academician Ling Wen, the chairman of the laboratory’s academic committee, and academic committee members such as Academicians Chen Yong, Guo Liejin, Liu Jizhen, Huang Zhen, and Liu Zhongmin, attended the meeting in person or via video link. Established in 1985, the laboratory was this year successfully promoted from a \"Provincial-Ministerial Joint **Key Laboratory Incubation Base\" to a \"Provincial-Ministerial Joint **Key Laboratory\". Academician Xie Kechang, Academician Ling Wen, Professor Zheng Qiang, and Professor Sun Hongbin jointly unveiled the plaque for the **Key Laboratory for Clean and Efficient Utilization of Coal-based Energy**, established through collaboration between the province and relevant ministries. Zheng Qiang pointed out that the laboratory needs to deeply reflect on three aspects of \"essence\" – true nature, proper responsibilities, and authenticity. It should continue to work hard along the path of coal chemical research pioneered by Academician Xie Kechang and his team, staying close to the economic and social development of Shanxi while meeting strategic needs. By focusing on the goal of \"clean and efficient utilization of coal,\" the laboratory should further develop its unique strengths and pursue innovation while maintaining integrity. It should also contribute to enhancing the innovation capabilities and basic research skills of Shanxi Province and the coal chemical industry as a whole. With a focus on Shanxi, aiming for national impact, and striving for global recognition, the laboratory should strive to achieve world-class results in order to help realize the goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality. Wang Yuanju stated that the Science and Technology Department of Shanxi Province, as the authority in charge of these key laboratories, will earnestly fulfill its relevant responsibilities, strengthen guidance and support for the construction and operation of these laboratories, and provide them with special support and financial resources. To implement the important speech spirit of **** during his inspection in Yulin, Shaanxi Province, it will pursue a green and low-carbon development path in order to make its contribution to achieving the \"dual carbon\" goals. It is hoped that the laboratory will take this as an opportunity to further deepen reforms and innovations, strengthen top-level planning, and by leveraging the team’s strengths and addressing key demands, make continued efforts to promote high-quality development in the field of clean and efficient utilization of coal-based energy. The Academic Committee hopes that the laboratory will earnestly study and implement ****’s important directives regarding the energy revolution and energy strategy, in particular the spirit of his speech during his inspection in Yulin, Shaanxi. It should thoroughly understand these directives and use them as a guide to scientifically plan the research directions for the next phase. The Academic Committee emphasized that laboratories should carefully plan their development strategies for the 14th Five-Year Plan period as well as for the medium- to long-term future, taking into account the current situation of the coal chemical industry. In particular, they should focus on the major needs of this industry in the context of the \"dual carbon\" goals, as well as on the key challenges that hinder progress. By leveraging specific research projects, they can conduct targeted studies.
