A few days ago, China’s first mass-produced (200 kg/day) methanol-to-hydrogen and hydrogen refueling integrated station, manufactured by Qingdao Yanghydro Group Co., Ltd., was completed in Chengyang District, Qingdao, and has been put into operation; it is set to be deployed across the country. This type of equipment features a modular design in the form of containerized skids, enabling rapid deployment of distributed hydrogen refueling stations as well as the upgraded integration of oil, gas, and hydrogen services at existing fueling stations. In October this year, the Shandong Provincial Energy Bureau released the \"Catalog of New Technologies, New Products, and New Equipment in the Energy Sector of Shandong Province (2022)\\" list; the \"Modular Methanol-to-Hydrogen Hydrogenation System (Platform)\\" developed by Qingdao Yanghydro Group Co., Ltd., recommended by Chengyang District in Qingdao, was included in this list. The performance of this equipment is among the best in the country; it reduces the overall energy consumption of the methanol-based on-site hydrogen production technology, which relies on smaller-scale equipment used in chemical plants, by more than 20%. This system integrates methanol reforming for hydrogen production, hydrogen purification, and hydrogen refueling into a single unit, thereby reducing the construction time for hydrogen stations to within 3 months. It also requires less than 80% of the space needed by traditional hydrogen stations. The cost of hydrogen for end-users is only 50% of that in stations that rely on transported hydrogen, amounting to less than 40 yuan per kilogram. Moreover, hydrogen can be used immediately after production, and the system allows for dynamic zeroing, which enhances safety; overall, its performance is superior to that of stations that depend on transported hydrogen. The Party’s *report states that it is necessary to “accelerate the planning and development of a new energy system.” Hydrogen energy is an important component of the future new energy system. However, it has long been constrained by the development of hydrogen supply infrastructure; the entire chain of production, storage, transportation, and refueling relies on gaseous form, resulting in high investment costs for infrastructure, and safety management challenges are even greater than those associated with liquefied natural gas... Until several academicians proposed using methanol, which is also a liquid like gasoline and diesel, as a carrier for hydrogen – an in-station hydrogen production approach that eliminates the need to transport hydrogen. **Top-level plans have specified demonstration approaches such as “methanol integration” and “in-station hydrogen production”. Last October, **ten ministries and commissions issued the ‘14th Five-Year Plan’ for the promotion of clean production across the country**, calling for vigorous efforts to carry out clean and low-carbon transformations in key industries, as well as the implementation of carbon-reduction projects involving the use of carbon dioxide in methanol production. In March this year, the **Development and Reform Commission** and the **Energy Bureau** jointly issued the \"Medium- and Long-Term Plan for the Development of the Hydrogen Energy Industry (2021–2035)\", proposing to establish a diversified hydrogen production system that is clean, low-carbon, and cost-effective, while also encouraging the synthetic methanol industry to shift from high-carbon processes to low-carbon ones. In addition, multiple provinces and cities such as Shandong, Guangdong, Shanghai, and Hebei have successively introduced local policies and standards to support \"hydrogen production on-site\". Therefore, the successful demonstration and mass production of this type of equipment are of great significance in addressing the key bottlenecks in the development of the hydrogen energy industry. At present, the Chengyang Hetao flexible factory of Yanghydro Group has an annual production capacity of 50 complete hydrogen production systems, which is approximately three times the number of such systems currently in use across the country. This capacity enables the supply of high-purity hydrogen for various laboratories and industrial applications, as well as for heavy-duty road vehicles powered by hydrogen, non-road equipment such as hydrogen-powered forklifts and agricultural machines, and lightweight vehicles like hydrogen-powered drones and motorcycles.
