On August 24, 2020, KBR (NYSE: KBR) received two contracts for the 500,000-ton/year methanol-to-olefins project and the 500,000-ton/year C2–C5 comprehensive utilization project that it is building in Ningdong Town, Lingwu City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China, on behalf of Ningxia Baofeng Energy Group Co., Ltd. (Baofeng Energy). Under the terms of the contract, KBR will provide technical licensing and process package design for this project. Once completed, it will have an annual olefin production capacity of 1 million tons, making it the largest methanol-to-olefins plant in the world in terms of production capacity. KBR will utilize its cutting-edge SCORETM steam cracking and MTO olefin recovery technologies to help Baofeng Energy achieve project goals of maximum yield and minimum investment. The SCORE steam cracking unit can convert ethane and propane feedstocks into ethylene and propylene, which are then separated and further purified in the MTO olefin recovery unit to produce polymer-grade ethylene and propylene products. The MTO olefin recovery process utilizes KBR’s commercially proven technology, which not only offers excellent performance but also boasts advantages in terms of investment and operating costs that are unmatched by other technologies.
