According to Sinochem New Network, on May 28, the Xiamen Empirical Energy Storage Technology Research Institute, jointly established by the Xiamen government and CATL, was officially launched. The research institute covers a total area of 150 mu, with an estimated total investment of around 3 billion yuan. It is currently the largest and most comprehensively equipped one-stop testing and validation platform in the world for energy storage systems across all scenarios. “The energy storage industry has officially entered the ‘proof-based era’. ”At the launch ceremony, Wu Kai, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chief scientist at CATL, noted that currently, the scale of energy storage stations is rapidly reaching the \"gigawatt level,\" which poses new challenges to the verification systems. He said that the role of the research institute is to shift industry quality standards from the component level to the entire system level, and to move verification steps forward from after deployment to before delivery. By intentionally creating the most severe operating conditions in the laboratory, it is possible to thoroughly assess the reliability of both the systems and the entire stations, thereby enabling the energy storage industry to enter an era of credibility, sustainability, and empirical validation. The research institute consists of five innovation laboratories, having achieved many world firsts. The grid compatibility laboratory is the world’s largest station-level platform for grid connection testing and validation, offering simulation capabilities for all scenarios ranging from individual battery cells to entire power grids, with the ability to simulate up to 1,000 grid nodes ; The testing range of the high-voltage safety laboratory spans from 1 kV to 500 kV, enabling the investigation of the true mechanisms behind equipment fires and explosions in extreme high-pressure environments ; The Thermal Safety and Combustion Laboratory is the world’s first large-scale indoor combustion facility equipped with a 20-megawatt calorimeter ; The electromagnetic compatibility laboratory possesses the only testing facilities in the world capable of accommodating a 40-foot container as a whole ; The environmental adaptability laboratory is capable of conducting system-level extreme environment tests on the entire energy storage container, including temperatures ranging from -50°C to 100°C, high-altitude pressure conditions up to 7200 meters above sea level, as well as tests for dust and water resistance across all relevant levels. Currently, Xiamen Empirical Energy Storage Technology Research Institute has established partnerships with global leading certification bodies such as TÜV SÜD, TÜV Rheinland, CSA, and CNAS, and will open itself up fully to the industry.
