Sinochem New Network reports that recently, the 2026 Electrochemical Energy Storage Safety Conference and the Exchange Meeting on Energy Storage Series Standards was held in Yichang, Hubei. Experts pointed out at the conference that with the full implementation of the new national standards on April 1, fire safety for energy storage power stations has changed from being an “optional consideration” to a “mandatory requirement.” Consequently, the design and construction of energy storage power stations in China have entered a new phase characterized by enhanced safety measures. It is reported that as the construction of new power systems accelerates, the electrochemical energy storage industry has entered a new phase characterized by scale expansion, concentration, and high-quality development. However, globally, there have been over 160 safety incidents at electrochemical energy storage power stations. Energy storage safety has thus become a key technical bottleneck hindering the development of the industry. In December 2025, the standard **\"Design Standard for Electrochemical Energy Storage Stations\" GB/T 51048-2025 was officially released and came into effect on April 1, 2026, marking a new phase in the design and construction of energy storage stations in China characterized by higher standards and enhanced safety. Chen Man, the head of the team responsible for drafting the new national standard and its primary drafter – as well as the deputy director of the Energy Storage Research Institute at Southern Power Grid Peak Shaving and Frequency Regulation Power Generation Co., Ltd. – pointed out that compared to the 2014 version of the standard, the new version includes additional provisions and improvements related to fire safety. For the first time, prefabricated battery units are included in the standards; it is specified that lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery rooms as well as these prefabricated units must be equipped with automatic fire suppression systems. Additionally, dry pipelines and connections capable of delivering fire-fighting water or other liquid extinguishing agents must be provided. At the same time, the standards set detailed requirements for fire separation distances and the layout of fire access roads, providing a clear basis for the design of prefabricated container-based energy storage stations. Concurrently with the conference, kick-off meetings were held for two new national standard atlases: “Design and Installation of Electrochemical Energy Storage Systems on the User Side” and “Fire Protection Design and Installation for Prefabricated Modular Electrochemical Energy Storage Power Stations”. The two atlases will respectively provide systematic and detailed design and installation guidance regarding currently prominent hotspots and challenges, such as energy storage application scenarios on the user side and the design of prefabricated cabin fire protection systems. The compilation of the new atlas also further fills the gaps in the system of standard atlases for energy storage, facilitating the transition of the new national standards from “provisions” to “drawings” and from “requirements” to “practice”. During the round-table discussion, experts made it clear that with the implementation of the new national standards, there is now a clear basis for the fire safety inspection of prefabricated modules. Aerosol fire suppression systems offer advantages such as compliance with national standards, compatibility with equipment, and controllable electrical conductivity and corrosiveness; however, it is essential to strictly prevent accidental discharge and to meet explosion-proof requirements.
