We requested equipment with a polytetrafluoroethylene lining, but the manufacturer used a welding method involving polytetrafluoroethylene sheets. Can such sheets be welded? I’m not sure what kind of glue to use for sticking things together; I’m afraid it might be a scam, so I need some advice. Our equipment operates at temperatures between 80°C and 150°C, at atmospheric pressure. Thank you all
For polymer materials containing fluorine, it is difficult to find solvents and adhesives with good compatibility when using bonding methods; therefore, heat welding is often the preferred approach for such materials. Adhesive bonding essentially involves the dissolution and curing of the material at the bonding site, while fluoropolymer materials seem to be those that are not affected by oils or salts.
I’ve also heard that the operating temperature for polytetrafluoroethylene should not exceed 100°C; mine reaches up to ~150°C. Can this polytetrafluoroethylene withstand that?
At 150°C, the polytetrafluoroethylene resin itself is fine; the problems mainly arise from the seams and adhesives. Could you tell me what kind of material it is? Perhaps using chemical equipment made of impermeable graphite is a good choice.
The plate lining process presents certain difficulties and potential risks. For small diameters, molding is better. There are also many approaches to the plate lining process; different manufacturers employ their own unique techniques. It can be used at 150°C and atmospheric pressure, but there are potential risks due to reasons such as tetrafluoride softening.
