I work in the field of butterfly valves, so I pay close attention to their torque. The torque of a valve can only be determined through calculations combined with ongoing testing of the actual valve. 1. The torque calculated theoretically is closely related to the precision of actual production and process control; therefore, theoretical values, especially those listed in calculation sheets, can only serve as a reference. 2. For new valves of a given diameter, we continuously test their torque. For example, if we have 50 sets of DN250 valves ordered, and all of them are to be equipped with electric drives, then we measure the torque under full pressure differences, and compare the actual torque values with the theoretical ones to ensure accuracy. 3. If the actual torque of the valve is much higher than the theoretical value, we need to determine whether there is an issue with the theoretical calculation formulas or with the manufacturing process. 4. Taking butterfly valves and ball valves as examples, since their valve stems are equipped with sleeves, the difference in torque can be significant depending on whether those sleeves are made of self-lubricating PTFE or metal stainless steel. It’s therefore difficult to say exactly how to calculate the most accurate torque value. It’s essential to work closely with the factory to verify the accuracy of the formulas and actual production processes. Otherwise, no matter how accurate the calculations may be, poor quality control by the factory can result in significantly higher torques, which would be a serious problem.
