Recently, there have been significant fluctuations in the shaft vibration at both the high and low pressure ends of the turbines in our plant. Currently, the oil temperature is around 44 degrees, and the steam temperature remains relatively stable. Does anyone know what could be the cause? MAN’s turbines. Thank you all. .
I’m not very familiar with steam turbines, but we have a MAN booster unit whose shaft vibration was high some time ago. Upon disassembly for inspection, it was found that the bearings had carbon buildup; the affected areas of the bearings were cleaned and the oil was replaced, and now the vibration levels are relatively stable. It’s probably caused by carbon buildup; many MAN devices have this problem.

I’m not sure what brand of oil you use; it might be related to the quality of the oil as well. Also, I’d like to know what the bearing temperatures are usually at your end :lol
I think it might be carbon buildup on the bearing shells, or there could be an issue with the clearance between those shells; in other words, the position of the shells may have shifted significantly. It is recommended that you have them inspected and repaired during a major overhaul. You should consult MAN’s manufacturer more closely regarding this, as they place great emphasis on the maintenance of their equipment, and generally do not allow outsiders to perform inspections or repairs during the maintenance period specified in the contract.
Carbon buildup on the shaft bearings of MAN engines is severe and quite common. We have taken it apart many times here; we do it during major repairs to clean it out.
