GEA Grasso screw compressor overhaul case study

This compressor is a GEA Grasso screw compressor unit from Germany, used to provide cooling for chemical processing operations. It has been in use for nearly 10 years; there are abnormal noises coming from the bearing area. After using a vibration detector, it was determined that the compressor needed to be disassembled and repaired, and it was sent to our company’s compressor repair center. After disassembly, please refer to the image below to see the actual compressor core. The degree of rotor wear is low; the main bearings show slight wear, the thrust bearings are loose and deformed, the axial and radial clearances are above the specified limits, and there is slight wear on the rotor and the chamber. It is not too late to schedule a major overhaul. However, one has to admire German manufacturing and its compressor control system; the large cooler next to it, under the same operating conditions and manufacturing process, is already severely worn out inside.
