Gas contains large amounts of carbon monoxide, and carbon monoxide is very dangerous. I remember my previous workplace; in the 1980s, there was no city gas, so the company built its own gas generator station to produce gas for use in the staff residences and the cafeteria. As a result, more than a dozen people died from gas poisoning.
If cleanliness and safety can be ensured, generating heat from coal is the most efficient and economical method. However, by converting coal into gas, which serves both as a fuel and as a raw material for the chemical industry, its utility is greater and its economic benefits higher than those of burning coal directly, resulting in broader application.
