Meeting Held to Review the Process Package for Yulong Petrochemical’s Coal-to-Hydrogen Project Author/Source: Duonaozi Date: 18-01-2021 Clicks: 14 From January 11 to 15, 2021, the meeting to review the gasification process package for the coal-to-hydrogen unit as part of the first phase of Yulong Petrochemical’s integrated refining and chemical processing project was held as scheduled. The participants included the project owner, Shandong Yulong Petrochemical, the patent holder, Yankuang Guotuo together with East China University of Science and Technology, and the design firm SEI. Due to the impact of the global COVID-19 pandemic, this process package review meeting was conducted via video conference. During the meeting, the project owners and the professionals in charge of SEI processes, instrumentation, piping, equipment, etc. had in-depth discussions with the patent holders regarding their respective issues. They exchanged detailed views on potential safety problems associated with the project and reached agreements on key time milestones. The meeting proceeded efficiently and in an orderly manner, achieving the desired objectives. The holding of this process package review meeting has laid an important foundation for the subsequent basic design and construction work. The Yulong Island refining and chemical integration project (Phase I) aims to establish a crude oil processing capacity of 20 million tons per year. The gasification unit utilizes a multi-nozzle opposed gasification technology; the inner diameter of the gasifier is 3,880 mm, with a design pressure of 6.5 MPa, and it operates in a 2-in-service/1-backup configuration. This is another successful application case following the Hengli 20 million tons per year integrated refining and chemical processing project on Dalian Changxing Island (6 3000-class multi-nozzle gasifiers) and the Zhejiang Petrochemical 40 million tons per year integrated refining and chemical processing project (12 3000-class multi-nozzle gasifiers). The advantages of multi-nozzle opposed gasification technology in terms of scale, technical stability, and reliability provide a mature and efficient solution to the shortage of hydrogen and fuel gas in China’s current large-scale refining and chemical processing projects. The Yulong Petrochemical coal-to-hydrogen project began its preliminary preparation work in June 2019, involving multiple rounds of discussions and clarifications regarding the proprietary gasification technologies in use. In-depth inspections of the operating units were carried out to assess their economic efficiency, stability, and reliability. A design institute was commissioned to conduct cost analyses for coal-to-hydrogen production, to determine whether to use slurry coal or pulverized coal as the feedstock, and whether to adopt a quenching process or a waste heat recovery process. After repeated evaluations and reviews of the technical options, the final technical approach was determined. In July 2020, a licensing agreement for multi-nozzle opposed gasification technology was signed with Yankuang Guotuo and East China University of Science and Technology.
