The ability to perceive time is a trait present in most organisms. Not long ago, scientists in Lisbon, Portugal, discovered through experiments that by adjusting the activity of certain neurons in deep areas of the mouse brain, it is possible to control its perception of time intervals, which can be either long or short. This team studied the structure of certain dopamine-releasing neurons (dopamine being one of the neurotransmitters in the brain) in the deep parts of the brain. This structure is called the substantia nigra pars compacta, and it plays a role in perceiving time. Dopamine neurons are associated with many psychological factors that perceive changes over time. In Paton’s experiments, painful stimuli applied to mice caused a sharp decline in their dopamine release. If the human substantia nigra is damaged, it can lead to Parkinson’s disease, which impairs the patient’s perception of time.
