Direct conversion of carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide achieved in Cologne, Germany — Xinhua Finance Frankfurt, July 18, 2022. Recently, Cologne Industrial GmbH has successfully developed an electrolysis technology that uses inexpensive and stable alloy materials as catalysts to directly produce carbon monoxide (or syngas consisting of carbon monoxide and hydrogen) from carbon dioxide as the raw material. Collin Company’s technology for producing carbon monoxide via carbon dioxide electrolysis employs a one-step process to convert carbon dioxide. The key is to use the appropriate catalyst and electrolyte solvent. Collin Company tested a cheap and stable alloy catalyst, which successfully converted carbon dioxide at a temperature of around 100 degrees to produce carbon monoxide, which can be used as a raw material for chemical products. The advantage of this technology is that, first, it is essentially similar to existing PEM technology; on one hand, it is possible to build upon the development roadmap of PEM technology to achieve large-scale application, and on the other hand, unlike PEM, Collin’s technology uses inexpensive and stable catalysts rather than precious metals such as platinum. Second, this technology can be directly coupled with industrial syngas to electrolyze carbon dioxide sources containing impurities, thereby eliminating the need for a carbon dioxide separation process. In 2017, the Shanghai Institute of Advanced Studies under the Chinese Academy of Sciences conducted research on the electrocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide. Carbon dioxide is directly converted in one step into fuels and chemicals such as carbon monoxide and formic acid under normal temperature and pressure conditions.
If carbon dioxide is directly converted into carbon monoxide, then does the other oxygen atom in the carbon dioxide molecule get converted into oxygen? Does it still need to consume hydrogen to be converted into water?
