According to Sinochem New Network, since the beginning of this year, the price of lithium carbonate has shown an upward trend with fluctuations, with the cumulative increase reaching as much as 60%. On May 27, the main contract for lithium carbonate on the Guangzhou Futures Exchange closed at 173,000 yuan. Although it has seen a decline from recent high levels, its increase over the course of the year remains significant. The development of the lithium industry in 2026 will be characterized by a shift in demand patterns, tighter supply and demand balances, as well as simultaneous global competition and cooperation. The demand driving the lithium industry has shifted from relying primarily on new energy vehicles in the past to the energy storage sector, with the rapid growth in this area providing new support for the industry. Against this backdrop, supply and demand in 2026 are likely to reach a tight balance, laying the foundation for prices and profits across the industry chain. Li Pan, a lithium industry analyst at Shanghai Steel Union’s New Energy Division, said that by 2026 the lithium industry is expected to remain in a state of tight global supply and demand balance; the supply and demand situation in the Chinese market will be slightly tight, with prices reaching a level that is higher than in 2025. The main favorable factor is the continuous growth in demand for new energy vehicles and energy storage; it is expected that future industry profits will concentrate among leading companies that possess high-quality resources and strong cost control capabilities. Leading lithium companies have also sent positive signals regarding the medium- to long-term trend of the industry. A relevant official from Jiangxi Ganfeng Lithium Industry Group Co., Ltd. said that in both the energy storage and power sectors, geopolitical factors along with high energy prices have heightened the importance of energy security, providing a positive boost to the new energy industry and thus supporting lithium demand in the medium to long term. Based on a comprehensive assessment, the global supply and demand of lithium resources are likely to remain in a tight balance in 2027, with strong demand providing effective support for lithium prices. With the recovery and restructuring of the lithium industry, companies in this sector are accelerating their efforts to develop their supply chain networks. Tianqi Lithium Co., Ltd. strengthens its position as a leader in global resources while expanding its industrial chain into the field of new lithium-ion battery materials. Ganfeng Lithium is improving its full industrial chain layout both at home and abroad, enhancing its resource self-sufficiency rate, and leading in the research and development of solid-state battery technologies. Shengxin Lithium Energy Group Co., Ltd. has strong ties with leading battery manufacturers in the downstream industry, enabling coordinated utilization of its production capacity both at home and abroad.
