Coal is China’s most important primary energy source. In the context of transformation and development, there are higher demands for the clean utilization of energy. In recent years, breakthroughs have been achieved in coal-to-liquid technology at the Shanxi Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and large-scale production has been established in regions such as Ningxia, Shanxi, and Inner Mongolia, providing a reliable approach for the sustainable use of coal. In December 2016, the Shenhua Ningxia Coal-to-Oil project, located in Yinchuan City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, successfully completed its first trial run with a feed rate of 4 million tons per year, producing high-quality products such as diesel, naphtha, and wax. Li Yongwang, the leader of the coal-to-oil technology project team and director of the Coal Indirect Liquefaction **Engineering Laboratory at the Shanxi Institute of Coal Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, explained that the large-scale production of oil from coal is a complex and highly integrated process, with the conversion of syngas into crude oil being the most critical step. He said that the process technology developed by him and his team has significant advantages, enabling China to join the ranks of the few countries that possess industrialized coal-to-oil technology, which holds practical significance for China’s energy utilization pattern. Li Yongwang said, “Firstly, the production process is completely different, and the catalysts used are also different. The catalyst is the most crucial factor; other technologies use iron, while with our catalyst we can produce two to three hundred tons of oil per ton of catalyst, whereas we can produce over a thousand tons of oil per ton of catalyst.” What we mean by advancement is low cost and high output. Through this production process, on the one hand, the pollutants from coal are controlled and collected during the production stage; on the other hand, the resulting product contains virtually no sulfur or nitrogen. This product can be used in our supply market to effectively enhance the quality of petroleum products. ”It is understood that the highly clean petroleum products produced by this coal-to-oil technology are sulfur-free, nitrogen-free, and have low aromatic content, exceeding the Beijing VI and Euro V standards. In addition to the Shenhua Ningmei project, million-ton-scale coal-to-oil facilities located in Hangjin Banner, Inner Mongolia, and Lu’an, Shanxi, have been built and are set to go into operation soon. Li Yongwang stated that the large-scale commercialization of coal-to-oil technology serves as an effective supplement to petroleum-based oils, and it represents an important transition in moving from traditional energy sources to a supply system based on renewable energy. He believes that the successful application of coal-to-oil technology in China has opened up a new pathway for the country to address the issue of sustainable energy supply, as well as to produce high-quality motor fuel and chemicals. Li Yongwang said, “For example, most of our energy resources are coal, which is in our own reserves.” As a major country, it is necessary to have ways to rely on its own resources to address supply issues, and coal plays an important role in this regard. So this coal-to-oil route is actually another way in which coal can be utilized on a large scale, aside from power generation. ”
